WPL 2023: Mumbai Indians thrash Gujarat Giants by huge margin to win first-ever match of tournament

Mumbai Indian women have recorded their first ever win in the first ever match of the first ever Women’s Premier League as they beat Gujarat Giants by runs. Mumbai skipper Harmanpreet Kaur played brilliantly scoring 65 runs off just 30 balls and powering her side to set a target of 208 runs.

First, Mumbai Indians team hit 207 runs in the loss of 4 wickets. In response, the Gujarat team was bundled for just 64 runs. Harmanpreet Kaur had a significant contribution to Mumbai’s win as she had a 216.67 strike rate in the match and hit 14 fours. She was also named player of the match for the game.

Mumbai Indians came to bat in the first match of WPL 2023 and got off to a poor start as they lost their first wicket for just 15 runs. After 10 overs the team had scored 77 runs on the loss of 3 wickets. Hereafter, Harmanpreet Kaur came onto the field and beat up all Gujarat Giants bowlers. Apart from Harmanpreet Kaur, Hayley Matthews scored 47 and Amelia Kerr scored 45 points for Mumbai.

The Mumbai Indians team dominated the Gujarat Giants from the start of the game. Except for only two batters in the second innings of the game, none of the Gujarat batters could score more than 10 runs. Four players from the team returned to the pavilion on a duck and in the end, the Gujarat team was only able to score 64 points. Apart from defeat in the match, Gujarat suffered another major setback. Team captain Beth Mooney retired due to injury.

In this match between Mumbai Indians and Gujarat Giants, Harmanpreet Kaur made history with her innings. Harmanpreet Kaur made a great record in this match as soon as she scored a half-century. She is the first player to score 50 in Women’s Premier League history.
