Raiders could owe Jon Gruden $40 million despite resignation

Jon Gruden may have a few more Raiders paychecks on the way.

The now ex-Las Vegas coach could still pocket $40 million of his remaining contract, per NFL Network, despite resigning last week after old emails using racist, sexist, homophobic and misogynistic language leaked.

The figure is reportedly what remains of the 10-year, $100 million deal Gruden signed in 2018.

The sides are reportedly working on a settlement, though the 58-year-old could also pursue legal options, including pressing the NFL for legal damages over his leaked emails.

Gruden’s correspondences were part of the league’s investigation into the workplace culture of the Washington Football Team. Due to the limited amount of people privy to the NFL’s findings, some in Gruden’s camp are advising he look into the damages route, according to Yahoo Sports.

Another element potentially complicating the sides’ divorce is the tenor of his conversations with team owner Mark Davis. If Davis forced Gruden to quit, Gruden could be entitled to all the guaranteed money in his contract.

How much of Gruden’s massive deal was guaranteed is unknown, though it appears he could have quite a bit more cash coming soon.
