New Jersey home of Macy’s heir Herbert Straus lists for sale
A New Jersey home built for Macy’s heir Herbert Straus in the 1920s listed for $1.3 million – but the offer didn’t last long for sale.
An offer has been made and the spread is currently under contract with a new owner for the first time since 1953, The Post has learned.
Straus’s father, Macy’s co-owner and U.S. Congressman Isidor Straus, perished on the Titanic with his wife, Ida, who refused a seat in a lifeboat to stay by her husband’s side as the ship sank.
Originally built on 143 acres, the estate – located in Middletown – has since been converted into a one-of-a-kind dairy barn.
Now known as Cobble Close Farm, the property now sits on 13 acres and features four private residences in the French Normandy style, built with materials transported from Europe, including stucco and ceramic tile.
The property is surrounded by fountains, gardens, a swimming pool and lawns bordered by Greco-Roman statues and an orangery.

The dairy barn covers 2,800 square feet and includes a solarium, parlor, dining room and an adjoining three-bedroom apartment.
Across all properties, offerings span 4,950 square feet.
Other features include a great room with a high ceiling with exposed beams, three fireplaces, two garages, a finished basement and three private and walled gardens.

The living room overlooks the cobbled courtyard.
Meanwhile, the master bedroom has its own private walled courtyard, fountain and sun loungers.
One side of the estate is the Navesink Country Club. On the other hand, horse stables and pastures are made for riding.
According to the listing, the property has been featured in a number of movies and has appeared in many advertisements, including those for Brooks Brothers, Victoria’s Secret, and fashion magazines such as Vogue, the listing notes.
“I am so excited to bring such a unique piece of history to the market,” realtor Katherine Raftery of Resources Real Estate said in a statement. “This is a truly rare opportunity – the setting and architecture are something you have to see to fully appreciate.”
“The property is ‘farm accessible’ and generates income from the sale of agricultural produce. In addition, additional income will come from renting out real estate to the Navesink Country Club,” the listing adds.
The house is a 10 minute drive from a number of excellent beaches.
