Live updates: Russia’s war in Ukraine
The Ukrainian army is under “increasing” pressure in Bakhmut, the scene of some of the fiercest fighting of the war, the British Ministry of Defense says.
According to British intelligence, Russian and Wagner forces have made further advances in the northern suburbs, leaving the Ukrainian-held part of the city vulnerable to Russian attacks from three sides.
Meanwhile, the Ukrainian military says numerous attacks have been carried out in various parts of the eastern Donetsk region, including Bakhmuthave been disposed of.
“Over the past day, our forces have repelled numerous attacks in the Vasiukivka, Dubovo-Vasylivka, Bohdanivka, Bakhmut and Ivanivske areas of the Donetsk region,” the general staff said. “In the Bakhmut sector, the enemy continues its efforts to encircle Bakhmut.”
On Friday, Russian troops blew up a vital supply bridge to Bakhmut that connected the besieged city to a nearby village.
Russia has been trying to conquer Bakhmut for months. Its military significance is limited, but a Russian victory would be a symbolic boost for the Kremlin after a series of costly setbacks.
